Movie of the Morning 1/18 Mr Skeffington

Movie of the Morning was Mr Skeffington.  It stars Bette Davis and Claude Rains.  Although I love Bette Davis it was Claude Rains who astounded me with his performance.  What an incredible actor and he should have won an Academy Award for it.  The other interesting thing was it one of the 1st Hollywood movies to battle anti-Semitism.  The films plot is that beautiful Fanny has all the suitors in New York but must marry for money so she chooses Mr Skeffington a wealthy Jewish Wall Streeter.  Mr Skeffington truly loves Fanny but all she is concerned with is her looks and her age.  Skeffington tells her, "a woman is only beautiful when someone loves her".  Despite his love for her, her constant rebuffs of him puts him off and they divorce.  After several years Fanny loses her looks and her suitors and realises the only man who really will love her is her husband.  Unfortunately, he has been in a concentration camp and has lost his sight.  Making for a perfect ending because he will always see Fanny as beautiful and young.

This movie was a bit long at 2.5 hours and not one I need to see again but was still very good.  It's a good picture to see at least once in your life.  3/4 ***
